Can I use the sort command

gnus-summary-sort-by-lines

and similar to sort some groups by adding it to the group parameters?
When I try this (gnus-summary-sort-by-lines . t) it doesn't seem work.

I'd also like to sort some of my big groups inversely by date...

There's no variable like that. I guess you want
(gnus-article-sort-functions 'gnus-article-sort-by-lines) or
(gnus-thread-sort-functions 'gnus-thread-sort-by-lines) for a threaded
display.
