according to mdoc.samples(7) it is useful for "preventing line breaks in
the middle of options", and that is how i've always used it. i just
realised that the same piece of text notes that the effect was once
achieved using the Op macro.

so my understanding is it has nothing to do with keeping "words". but
god knows.
