You are certainly right that we shouldn't make things complicated trying to work around broken shells. This particular change doesn't do any harm elsewhere, though, and it doesn't add a single byte to the code, so i don't think i need to revert it. That or IIRC the xpg4 version they have around, which is nowhere near as broken. The commit just seems to make things less readable.
