Ah, yeah, that's fair; this is, apparently, a groffism:
  If ⟨string⟩ starts with a ‘.’ (dot) immediately followed by a valid
  -mdoc macro name, interpret ⟨string⟩ and use the width of the result.
  Almost all lists in this document use this option.
