For the record, there is a public domain libc that supports Linux and can
 be used to build GCC on some platforms (ie known to work on mainframes): 
pdclib (from the PDOS project on sourceforge)
It's ANSI C89 only, though.

LGPL +static linking exception for now, and review later?
Or just stick with LGPL?
