Hi,

in a recent thread Rich reiterated that it would be nice to move
from numerous .s files under src/math/$arch to C files with inline
assembly. I'd like to help with that, but at the same time I'd
like to avoid getting again into a situation when I hear how nice
it would be to get something done, and provide patches only to get
(some of) them applied 1.5 years later :)

So to get going I intend to post patches one by one in reply to this thread,
starting from rather trivial updates to x86_64 math files in order to
get feedback about policies and formatting.

I don't expect any such patches applied before the next release, but
I'd like to ask for no huge delays on high-level questions.
