I cannot get this hung, nor with pdftex, pdfetex, dvips output, dvipsone
output, pdf output. Can someone else try this on his linux box? [with
latest version that has metafun support]

I am also stuck on solaris with the same example.
The culprit is \setupbodyfont[pos].

When texexec looks hung it is often asking for input:

              run time : 1 seconds
       dvi to metapost : mpgraph
              metapost : mpgraph
                format : metafun
This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.3.1)
Sorry, I can't find the mem file `metafun.mem'; will try `mpost.mem'.

... and it's waiting for the user to type a response.  I have never
gotten used to working with tex interactively, so I use makefiles that
redirect texexec's standard input from /dev/null.  

Doing that you get quick failure instead of hanging, so you can check
the log files.

Try something like this:

        texexec --pdf test < /dev/null

You seem to be using a C shell or tcshell, so your results might be
different.  I don't know much about the C shell.

... it still hangs?  You get the same results?  I'm just curious.

I made the experiment on linux (I'm not sure I have bash on solaris 
here) and I get the same results.

Can you kind of abort the job? On windows ctrl-c, then tex stops and you
can see what it is doing, in which macro is it.

I know, but as I said in a previous mail, ctrl-c doesn't work
and with ctrl-z, you see all the things that are running.

You may want to turn of web2c font auto generation, when a font is not
found (you probably need [ber,pos] to get the right mapping on the font
file) tex starts looking/generating/etc.

Ok, so I have added MKTEXTFM = 0 to my texmf.cnf file, and this helps.
pdftex no longer hangs, 
but (with the source code having \setupbodyfont[pos]) I get a message

If I do a fresh experiment with \setupbodyfont[ber,pos] I get the
good result, even though I have MKTEXTFM = 0.
(And actually, if I do not alter MKTEXTFM, it works now too...)

Why was mktextfm called and why is `ber' needed?
(Sorry, I have not yet had the time to read the context manual...
I will, in due time, when I am done with the metafun manual :-)

font-ber.tex defines the Karl Berry names for some PS fonts.
Just look at the file yourself. Perhaps youmust change some
definitions or get the right fonts (and tfm) from CTAN.

the *8t.* files for Palatino, that's why mktextfm was called

There is no such thing as a palatino font, I'm afraid. There are a lot
of them.
The URW version of Palatino is quite different from the Adobe version
which is 
quite distinct from the Monotype one and that doesn't even count the
Corel/Bitstream 
versions. I personally prefer to use the Berry names only for Adobe PFB
fonts,
to avoid confusion on my system, but it's a matter of taste, really.

I liked to use the Adobe Palatino (also because they're built in PS
printers), 
but my try to convert the MacOS fonts to Linux/Windows pfbs failed
(wrong enc?),
so I do now use the URW Palladio -- it's free, and the quality seems ok. 

I'd suggest you set preferences to the free URW PS fonts that come also
with Ghostscript.
Ehm, if the fonts are under the GPL (and not GPLL) -- must I put all
TeX "source code" that uses them under GPL? What abaout the printed
products?

BTW:
I was surprised not to find TeX files for Berkeley (pby) on CTAN.
Seems I must make it myself. (Berkeley OS italic is my "corporate font").

One way to trace an error is to isolate the mp code so that you have one
graphic, and then run 

texexec --mptex test34b-mpgraph.mp

in context, font names are resolved as late as possible, and ber [you can
search for a file font-ber.tex and take a look] maps the fonts to berry
names, which I suppose you use.

A quick browse may help.

Search for a file calles cont-sys.rme, rename it to cont-sys.tex and
preload the ber font file there so that you never have to say ber again.

I have downloaded the context beta yesterday with texexec 2.3 (BTW: in the
modul header there is version=2000.03.25) and there is no MKTEXTFM in it. 
But I am no perl expert so if it is set in a file sourced by texexec ...

Why do you use the URW name for palatino?  AFAIK the URW font is an exact
replacement for the adobe one (in terms of metrics) and so teTeX uses the
adobe names for the standard 35 postscript fonts and only substitutes the
pfb-files.

So with my (regarding to fonts) non modified teTeX beta the adobe names
has to be used for the standard 35 postscript fonts:

The URW fonts are _NOT_ exact replacements for the Adobe fonts.  Even
worse, Adobe switched some of the fonts supplied in Acrobat Reader 4
(e.g., Arial and TimesNewRomanPS for Helvetica and Times-Roman).  Many
PostScript "clone" printers also do font substitutions.  These are 
usually harmless, but if you compare the same page from different
printers of the same resolution you can see differences in weight.

I suspect the URW fonts were pre-existing high-quality fonts and have been
scaled to approximate the metrics of the original Adobe "Laserwriter 35".
In any case, the glyphs are not the same and some metrics differ (if you
compare AFM files), so if you are being careful you would want to use URW
metrics rather than Adobe metrics.

Arial-Italic is a "real" italic, while Helvetica-Oblique is a 
synthetic font.  I've enountered far too many cases where a figure
was created using Windows and Arial-Italic, which is changed to 
Helvetica-Oblique in the EPS file, but gives different appearance
(in particular, slanted '|[]()' glyphs) on some printouts but
not for everyone.  At a Win95 corporate site where the systems
are supposed to be configured to one "standard", some systems 
use PCL and some AdobePS to print on the same HP printer models,
resulting in different output from Acrobat Reader 4.

If I want to avoid such problems the easiest strategy is to embed the URW
fonts in the PDF or PS, although I still use Adobe fonts when I want
minimal file size and think I can avoid the worst problems. In figures
(where Helvetica is commonly used) I generally convert fonts to outline
paths for annotations.

Current software makes it very hard for most users to know what
fonts they are actually using.  I favor the "full-disclosure"
approach where you get exactly what you specify.  

Ghostscript 6.01 currently refuses to embed the base 13 fonts. 
I think the "todo" list includes implementing "AlwaysEmbed",
but I haven't checked it in a recent beta.
