I like these questions. TeX is too hard to setup/debug. We really need a
good portable IDE which can take care of this. Any takers? Ehh, well, then,
maybe I have to do it myself then :-)

But to proceed: changing texmf.cnf is the key. As you are on Unix, first
create a link to pdftex, for example:

	cd /usr/local/bin
	ln -s pdftex context

So now you have a context pdftex.

Second step is to extend texmf.cnf with information about context's memory
sizes. For example you might want to add a line:

main_memory.context = 1100000

But my .context lines are scattered all over texmf.cnf, so I send you mine
as attachment.

That's a nice step-by-step upgrade method!  Maybe there could be a
section in minstall.pdf for context upgrades.  It looks like it is
currently geared toward installation in a system that lacks context
completely.

You copied the new cont-en.fmt to texmf/web2c?

You're sure the right cont-en.fmt is loaded? Look in log file:

	texexec --interface=en myfile.tex

I linked pdftex to context now (my texmf.cnf provided enough size,
so I did not bother to overwrite my file with yours), then I linked
pdftex.fmt to context.fmt, reran texhash, ran context on cont-en, reran
texhash and ran cont-en on my file. Same mistake again.

It's "fmtutil".  (I know you know, but it may help Johannes Hüsing.) 

You can uncomment the cont-... lines when you run "fmtutil --edit",
and then run:

    texexec --make en nl de uk

... to generate the formats.

The cont-de.fmt or cont-en.fmt. You can do this with fmutil or manually by:

	cd ......./texmf/tex/context/base
	pdftex -ini cont-en

instead of pdftex you might need to use `context' as pdftex and other links
to pdftex usually have very conservative memory sizes.

Upgrade by:

1. moving the original sources to /tmp or so. Moving texmf/tex/context/ away
is usually good enough.
2. Unpack them again.
3. And create the formats.

Tobias Burnus advised me on upgrading the ConTeXt package. After doing so,
I get the following disturbing output. Not that I get this error message
before the 1st line of my source is even processed.
