Hi Lutz,
I wanted to post a similar message myself. Normally I use the Palatino font
family. After installing the Context beta version 2001.8.8, my files won't
compile anymore. The error was also related to Times Roman metric file not
found.

! Font \*10ptrmtf*=Palatino at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not
found
...
According to the log file it happens after reading the type-exa.tex file. -
Only if I am commenting out the \setupbodyfont[ber,ppl,10pt] line then
Context runs smoothly (with CMR fonts).
