Hi ConTeXters.

I've finally documented some font support macros and typescripts that
I've been working on. I collected the ideas in a MyWay magazine:

 <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.pdf> (782 Kb)

The companion files are on the site as well:

 <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.zip> (25 Kb)

A web page to hold all this stuff is forthcoming.

The best way to describe what it does is with the abstract:

This is a summary of issues encountered and solutions
implemented in order to support some advanced OpenType
features in ConTeXt. This article describes an accompanying
package that addresses installation (using TeXFont),
accommodating extended opticals families, and some ``pro'' font
features. The extended character set afforded by pro fonts
enables support for comprehensive small caps, old-style
figures, and the use of greek glyphs to give workable math fonts.
Although the typescripts and commands are described
together, certain features (like variant encodings for TeXFont
and the idiosyncratic method for creating new math fonts)
can be used independently of the other features described.

I hope this proves interesting, if not useful, to others.

Cheers,
adam

Yes indeed! I've privately congratulated Adam on this, but I'd like
to so publicly. Really nicely done.

Hans, it would be really nice if you could distribute Adam's extended
version of texfont with the regular distribution.

Also, would be great to see the command I earlier asked for (but is
beyond my skills to figure out myself) to have a style switch for
footnote marks to enable use of a special superior digit variant. :-)

Great work! - Once one will have OpenType-fonts this will definitively help

Shall I rename the osft1.enc you sent me earlier as ecOSF.enc, and add
that to the distribution? Have anything else to contribute?

If you think other would be interested in this encoding, send it my way,
and I'll throw it in there...

OSF variant, obviously (typographically, that'd generally be the
default font).

I've also created variants to remap the superior and tabular figures
into the normal figure slots. This produces nicer footnote marks
(well, in LaTeX; don't know how to get it working in ConTeXt) in the
first case, and nicer numeric tables on the other. I've only manually
created these for the "regular" font, since there's little point in
bold or italic numbers in either of these cases.

I agree.

Frankly, I don't know. It's annoying.
I suspect it's probably as you say.

So, other than font bugs, what's missing?

Also, I've noticed odd kerning with apostrophes, in both Jenson Pro
and, it seems, in your sample on page 1 where the word "Adobe's" looks
quite odd.

Any ideas what's going on with that? A mistake in the metric files?
And how would this be corrected; go into the kerning pairs and adjust
them for this glyph?

I like good hanging (I prefer "punctuation", myself), too. Bill or Achim
could define their own hanging preferences in their own fonthandling in a
file that's input. They can then do a mass find/replace of
"handling=pure" and put their own named font handling in.
