sample styles

Hi All, 

To help people a it with starting up, I want to define a few standard
styles. Now I suppose that people want something 'article', 'report',
'book' and 'letter', but what should go in there? I don't want to use
our company styles. What do you want, how should it look, what should it
do? Do you want latex counterparts, in which case I need some samples.
Or don't you want styles at all ...

I'm not sure if I'm understanding the question.  If you mean:

    \setupstyle[letter]
    % ...

... then I don't really have an opinion.  But if you mean that you are
drawing up a set of example documents illustrating how to achieve a
familiar style using ConTeXt commands, then that sounds great.  

I find myself wondering, e.g., how exactly I would go about setting up
headers with running headers showing chapter (for one-sided documents)
and chapter/section (for two-sided documents).  I know that it will be
\setupheadertexts and \setupfootertexts, but I'm unsure of what I'll
put in the square brackets.

My point is that I would find it helpful to see documents formatted in
familiar styles.

If you are looking for a sample of a LaTeX article, I have one that's
about emacs and programming in Linux that I'd be happy to share.  I
have some plain-TeX letters, a plain-TeX resume ... let me know.

Come on, we're only talking about some styles. Most is already there, so
once you're synchronized ...

In context there is: \usemodule. 

There are m- modules that contain things that do not belong to the core
of context, currently the chemics module, soon the math module, there is
a units module (10 \square \milli \meter \per \second), a flow chart
module, etc. The s- modules are styles, currently there are 6
presentation ones (14 on my machine), one for the maps, one for tugboat,
etc  Last there are p- modules, some internal pragma ones, like the page
selection styles used in the a la carte project.

That's what I mean.

\setupheadertexts [chapter] [section] 

\setupheadertexts [whatever]

or 

\setupheadertexts [{\getmarking[chapter][first]}] [...] 

or 

\setupheadertexts [{\getmarking[subsection][all]}] 

or ...  

1 arg is centered, 2 are left and right (single and double sided
swapped) and 4 args are for different doublesides ones.

Ok. Some latex article and report styles. How important is A4/letter
size?

Hmmm.... This is a good question.

One thing that could happen is you get a request for all kinds of styles
suitable to individuals' taste around the world. That would be a headache.
So, I'm sure you don't want to go that route.

However, I can remember learning a ton of stuff by trying out the
presentation styles, of which I think there were about four different ones
when I was looking at them. so, I am thinking, why not put out styles for
book, report, article, letter, slides, but have several examples of each.

For example, you might have book-1, book-2, book-3, etc., where in one you
have underlined running heads, in another you don't, etc. That way, people
can go into the preamble and learn a little about setting up their own
layouts, much as I tried to do with the presentation styles.

More work, but just a thought. I really learned a lot from those
presentation styles, and in fact, will be revisiting those styles again
toward the end of my sabbatical, just before returning to work. They were
so helpful.

Well, setting up a few styles is not that for me to do. The real hard
ones are those where the input is fuzzy, needs to be manipulated and

something s-boo-01 and so on, probably mapped onto more verbose names
using the file mapping mechanism

The idea behind the styles is than one loads them and in the document if
needed overloads settings. So, I advice never to copy such a style
s-pre-01 to for instance s-pre-93 I can reserve the prefix u- for user
files if needed. 

So, concerning the presentation styles, when you want different colors,
just load the style and redefine the colors
(\definecolor[BackGroundColor][...] and so)

Do you mean that \setuplayout[location=middle] should be a texexec
option? 

A quick hack: 

\startmode[centered]
  \setuplayout[location=middle]
\stopmode

texexec --mode=centered yourfile

Hans, a really important consideration for printing styles for paper:
It should be as easy as possible to switch between doublesided
(backspace/topspace) printing and centered (middle/middle)
printing. This because there are two popular direct-to-plate programs
for PDF files that have a different opinion on which on is the correct
way.

I knew this would happen.  Didn't read my Email for 20 or so hours and now
have a mailbox the size of the Bible *and* missed a really interesting
thread.  I agree with Ed - Hans, your output level is amazing.  I am
beginning to wonder if there is secretly more than one of you :)

Anyway, back on topic.  I use LaTeX for two things only now: letters and
journal/conference articles.  The former because the g-brief style happens
to produce letters with the address block so placed that it is visible
through the window of the envelope.  By no means impossible to do with
ConTeXt, but it's already there in LaTeX.  Journal/conference articles
partly because of BibTeX (and I am planning when I get a chance to have a
look at the new ConTeXt bibliography stuff, btw) and because journal so
often supply styles for LaTeX.  So I think there is no single style that I
would use, but I would certainly benifit from a good example or two so
that I can replicate third-party LaTeX styles.

So if you're not already flooded with examples, Hans, I can send a couple:
letters (LaTeX letter, g-brief), conference proceedings (SPIE, ICPR).

My mailbox *has* the size of a bible, because currently I'm helping

Well, I make long days and, lucky me, I can work reasonable well while
watching TV at the same time. Due to my slow machine I have lots of
waiting time while processing big (many thousands of pages) files. 

Furthermore, there is one more (Ton Otten), but he's just using context
and making some money while I'm playing with tex -) Most time btw goes
into finetuning (things nobody will probably notice) and testing (pdftex
and so).

Actually we do that for many years now. The only complication will be
that here we have it linked to a (indeed tex based) database for
adresses, working groups that also can be used or mailings and so.

German readers should understand why his last name ends with an 'n'.
I suspect that Hans' email is keyed in in India somewhere.

Along with the facility to automagically create labels for closed
envelopes, yes. Very handy.

This is why I am really replying to this message: I have removed a lot 
of the problems with the bib stuff, so it is time to do some new tests 
with it (hoping someone is inclined to do that).

Rough changes:

   - the layout of the "apa" reference list has been fixed so that 
     it is now almost 100% the same as latex's apalike.
   - \thepublications becomes \placepublications and \completepublications
   - minor changes to the bst files
   - lots of internationalization added (still not perfect I suppose)
   - numeric references are optionally sorted & condensed into stuff
	 like "1-5,7"
   - fixes for normal TeX as opposed to e-TeX	

This completes my part of m-bib for now, I think. To be done later:

   - Make the code look like the rest of context
   - More internationalization stuff
   - Language-specific labels for 'References' and ' and ' etc.
   - Other bibliography styles
   - Better documentation

Given the nature of context, you can expect styles that can be
customized (once we have the common components identified).

I already sent you my isoletter.cls + drivers on 1 Nov 1998, which I
think is a very good style for letters, derived from Victor Eijkhout's
brief.cls. 

I sent it also to Gilbert, on 16 June 1999, after he told me that he
would like to convert it to a context style.

Neither of these actions ever has led to something... so it's a little
disappointing to see you ask for user input.

I thought gilbert had already covered  a preliminary one for you -)

Sorry for that, but the iso letters were already on my 'private' agenda.
The main point there was that I want an interface to external databases
(otherwise I cannot use it myself), which is a still undocumented
feature of context as well as a clean way to paste in logo stuff. Now
enveloppes have been added. So, in the end you will be served ... but a
bit more complete.

Just like latex, no one is complaining about them, right? :-)

But to be serious: I think latex look alikes are fine.

   I am new to this list so my apologies if this has been answered before. I 
checked the Mail archives and there was much discussion back in 99 about 
providing sample styles for documents, like Latex does. Searching the Pragma 
site I can only find examples of presentation like documents. I much prefer 
to work from a almost ready style and just make the changes I require since I 
am not a good typographer and rather start from a sound foundation. Am I 
missing something? In this particular moment I need sample book documents. In 
Context, the sample documents are very important, IMHO, because the 
complexities of screen/paper publishing. It would be nice that both are taken 
into account in those samples.

BTW, the spanish settings for some of the keywords in comp-ita.tex are not in 
good, what is the procedure for requesting modifications? The manual seems to 
imply that the spanish selector should be "es" but in reality is "sp".

is what you need for a basis layouy; the last two differ per doc, so that 
leaves two, means that the average style will be rather small

the pdftex manual source is a nice example; also, since screen docs are 
more demanding, if you understand these ...

i will post paper styles later, when i start with the layout design manual

\spanish is even better and should work,

it's no problem to provide an extra language synonym

AFAIK there are no other sample styles yet.
If you want you can get the setup of my first ConTeXt project, a
religious book. But it has some 'special' features that you probably
don't want.
