are you ser HOME is set?
\ctxlua{print("1",environment.homedir)}
\ctxlua{print("2",environment.oldhome)}
\ctxlua{print("3",os.getenv("HOME"))}
\ctxlua{print("4",os.getenv("USERPROFILE"))}
gives 4 values here
