I don't know enough about ConTeXt to declare this The Right Way(tm), but
here's one way that Works For Me(tm):

\starttext
\newdimen\mydimen
\mydimen=1in
\hbox{\framed[height=\mydimen,width=1in]{before}
 \advance\mydimen by 55mm
 \framed[height=\mydimen,width=1in]{after}}
\stoptext
