It did not fail, you forget only the braces.

\def\comm
  {\groupedcommand{\hspace[medium]\tt}{\hspace[medium]}}

To get more control over the spacing define your own \hspace:

\definehspace[commspace][medium]

\def\comm
  {\groupedcommand{\hspace[commspace]\tt}{\hspace[commspace]}}
