(This bug was introduced when I decided to use a second dummy [args] to
get rid of unwanted spaces: #2 had to become #3)  

For Erik: take a look at lang-ger.tex and see how the language specifics
are defined. Different meanings of "e for whatever encoding and pdfdoc. 

The update also takes care of \TeX and \kap and \type and a few more in
bookmarks.

I had a little puzzling problem myself compiling a large doc with the
newer ConTeXt/PDFtex. All seemed fine but the dutch word 'slotscene' with
an accent grave on the first e showed, in the PDF file, a capital S with
an inverted circonflexe ^ on top of it...

I had made sure to have all *.enc encoding files from my earlier
successful ConTeXt/PDFtex setup copied to the current setup. And I
re-checked my psfonts.inf and psfonts.map files where these .enc files are
addressed, even though I don't know if PDFtex uses these at any time.

Then I used the patch that Hans Hagen gave in his earlier message:

and recompiled, with identical problematic result in this specific word.

Planning but not wanting to cause Hans any trouble I double checked the
code in my source dodument and saw that in this particular place I used
the high-ascii character ASCII-138 instead of \`{e}

Convinced that this makes no difference, I changed it to \`{e} anyway and
after recompile I saw with great pleasure that the character comes out
perfectly now!!!

So it seems as long as I stick to conventional ways of describing high
ascii output using \" etcetera, I'm safe and successful.

There was indeed a problem with umlauts. Get the latest, yesterday I
posted a version that does them ok, as well as in pdfdoc encodings
(bookmarks etc). Sorry for the troubles.

No problem. Wanting to get the "latest" I got a con-text.zip from
www.ntg.nl/context (mentioned in your signature) but that delivered a set
of files from august last year which i *luckily* didn't dunk all over my
present context!

I must have missed something, like the location where the latest context
can be expected to reside.

NO. You must be at eriks server! I always upload to his server. When ok,
he send it to the ntg one. Erik, the current version is ok and can be

This depends on the enco-* file you have loaded into context. 

For Frans (dos/os2 terminal), this should be enco-ibm.tex which maps
the character that is present at location 138 of the ibm terminal font
into the equivalent of \`{e}. Result: it looks like /egrave on screen
and compiles as /egrave in context.

For windows/unix users, the character that is displayed as /egrave is
in location 0xE8 (decimal 232). The enco-win.tex file does the
conversion in this case. This one maps 232 into \`{e}, while 138
becomes \v{S}. 

So, Frans is loading the wrong file, probably because of changes to
context in the recent months. Try starting your document with

		\useencoding[ibm]

Right. I decided to split fonts and encodings. This enables all kind
mappings needed for for instance pdf. The umlaut problem I refered to
was 'de' specific. 
(Compare:  \"e with \de "e  and you see that an umlaut is something
different from the dutch trema).

Well, since 4 weeks I switched over to Windows NT, a newer (though not the
very latest) ConTeXt plus a newer PDFtex 9the FPtex installation) which
has begun to work beautifully in the past weeks, with the patient help of
Hans

No, either \useencoding[win] or \useencoding[ibm]. It doesn't really
depend on the operating system but on the font you use in your editor. 
If it's a dos-based editor, it probably uses the console font (which
is [ibm]). If it's a windowed editor, it will probably use System or
Fixed (those are both [win]). 

Just try both and see which one gives you the correct result. Some
editors allow you to convert automatically between these two types,
which is quite convenient for already existing docs (if yours doesn't
try using Winword to do this: read as dos-text and write as ansi-text).
