Hi:

Does anyone know of an alternative to Xpdf or Acrobat for Linux? Xpdf
seems really slow and the fonts look bad, and Acrobat under Linux is
just not as good as it is under Windows.

Best wishes,

Matt

ghostscript/view is ok, but slower as well; it does not support the
interactive features other than simple hyperlinks (i wonder why this is not
implemented) [btw, is acrobat that bad under linux? runs ok here
(vmware+suse on win2k)

I asked about it to the GSView programmer some time ago. /pdfmark
support for standard hyperlinks in PDFs is just an
easy-to-implement plus, which is why it's there. GSView is a
*PostScript* viewer, not a PDF one :)

It's not something "challenging" to implement --it's a waste of
time, in the opinion of the author :) (ok, maybe really not a
"waste", but too much time to be spent on something the tool is
not intended for).

Did you try xpdf 2.x? It's a bit better than older versions, but still
far from Acrobat...
You can view PDFs with some GhostScript viewers also, but my
experiences (on Linux/PPC where exists no Acrobat) told me to use Xpdf
until I switched to MacOS X...

Acrobat Reader under Linux is limited to Version 4. On Windows you get
Version 5 which has more bells and whistles. But I use ver. 4 all the
time.

contra!

I'm using the following on a FreeBSD box under Linux `emulation':

 acroread-5.06_1 = up-to-date with port

If I recall correctly its much faster than 4*

hm, just to make sure i resume my slumbering linux system and saw acrobat
5.05 performing quit well on it; actually, 5.05 was there for linux before
it came available for windows

The main reason I was asking about pdf viewers in the first place is
that both Xpdf and Acrobat 5.* (Linux) seem to load pages much more
slowly than Acrobat under Windows. Xpdf is just rediculous. And
Acrobat is slow with large files like our beloved ConTeXt manuals. I've
changed my preference from pdf to ps because GGV is so much better
(IMHO) than the available pdf viewers and I hardly ever write
interactive documents.
