I prefer / to be just a / in math. Polish formats define `//' to be `/' in math too. For example, when using `/' notation, we write $4//2=2, 4//a=b$ Except above, there are two reasons for using double slashes: 1. they make possible to automatically re-encode between polish text which uses `/' notation and, for example, Latin-2 2. what about $4//2=2\quad\hbox{oczywi/scie}$ --Wlodek.
