Hello,
I'd like to include a short quote in classical greek with all
diacritics in a ConTeXt document
which is otherwise plain english. What is a good way of doing this?
Do I need to change the encoding?
Thanks,
Matthias

Matthias—
I would recommend using Thomas Schmitz’ Greek module (http://
modules.contextgarden.net/t-greek). It works very well for me.

Thanks, Alan,
this package looks nice, but I can't figure out where to put things,
despite instructions...
I unzip texms.zip and get two directories, which I am supposed to put
into the texmf tree. I tried it with
the directory (on my Mac)
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/
and put all files form the downloaded texmf.zip into the
corresponding subdirectories
(is there an easy way -- on a Mac, I had to authenticate each copy).
Then I ran sudo texhash and sudo updmap --enable Map tasgreek.map.
The first time I got
!!! ERROR! The map file `tasgreek.map' has not been found at all.
and subsequent times "Map files not recreated.", which sounds
suspicious.
Then, running a simple test file shows that the greek module is being
loaded, I get n error message, but also
no greek text in the output :(
Any hints? I probably have messed up my texmf tree now...
Thanks in advance,
Matthias

That's due to a change in the TeX Directory Structure. Try running
sudo updmap-sys --enable Map tasgreek.map
and see if that solves your problem.
Good luck

Oops, that means your TeX installation is really old. Are you using
Gerben's distribution? I'd recommend upgrading unless there's an
important reason why you wouldn't want to do so. I'm afraid it'll be
difficult to help you with your problem on your current installation,
I don't have access to a machine with such a system.
Best

Hi Thomas,
I sticked with a 2005 release from last fall (very old???) to avoid
running into incompatibility issues with
current projects.
After updating (iinstaller), three things happen:
i) \eqalign breaks (as noted before on this list, I have to see
whether there is a fix... :(
ii) updmap-sys works without an error message :)
iii) TeXing my sample results in an apparent font problem. Log file
below. :(
I used
\setupgreek[font=Gentiumlun,scale=1.2]
Anything I can do about it?
Thanks,
Matthias

As afollow-up, I tried moving the font files some place else.
I first hat the font directory in
~/Library/texmf/
and then put them into
~/Library/texmf//texmf/
where they are apparently found, this time the log file says the font
metrics can't be found.
See below. Do I have to generate them?

Warnings like this used to mean that you had a mismatch where you
have a virtual font (<name>.vf) file, but that the matching metric
file (<name>.tfm) is not supposed to be a virtual font. This may be
the thing that is confusing pdftex? Too many (.vf) files instead of
missing files?
Cheers,
Taco

Have a look at the documentation: the font is not included, you need
to download it first... I f you want a font that works right away, try
\setupgreek[font=Ibycus,scale=1.2]
Good luck

Great, this works now!
That was definitely the easiest fix of the day.
Thanks a lot.

On the subject of fixes:
Hans' new ConTeXt release is now available for download, and it
includes fixes for \eqalign and \startalign. The release notes
are here:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Context_2006.01.31
I'll do a formal announcement and CTAN upload tomorrow.
Cheers, taco

Just a quick question about the new release(s): I've seen that
formats are now installed in $HOMETEXMF instead of $TEXMFLOCAL. Is
there a reason for this change, and is it possible to have them
installed in the old place? I preferred that way because it keeps
everything in one location.
Best

Depends on your tetex/texlive setup, I think. afaik, texexec calls
kpsewhich to decide on the path to use.

Which commands have you used for updating ?
I follow the page http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation
, it works perfectly for me.

No, that's not the point, updating works. I just see that in my
$HOMETEXMF, I now have a directory web2c/pdfetex where format files
are stored. This directory has been created on Jan 25, at one of the
latest updates. I haven't changed my texmf.cnf, so the behavior of
texexec --make has changed during one of the last releases, I guess
2006.01.16. And I'm just wondering if I can have the old behavior
back as I prefer it.
All best

I downloaded the latest release from yesterday, and it doesn't create
a web2c directory in my $HOMETEXMF anymore, so either a problem has
been fixed, or I did something wrong to get this result. Sorry for
the noise.

There are no pertinent changes to texexec (going back to 20051218)
so if you are right about the date, it has to be something in your
local environment that has changed.
