Referring to subfigures?

Referring to subfigures?

I know that I can use \startcombination to create
figure that are combinations of other figures, but is
there a way to make a cross-reference to the figures
within the combination?

If you have labeles your figs in the combination with a/b/c/ etc, and when
the whole thing has a ref, you can say: 

\in{figure}{a}[fig:thelableofthisfig]

so, \in and \at take an optional second arg so that this exmple wil come
out as "figure 1a"

Are "a/b/c" actual labels for cross-referencing, or
are they just captions?

  {\externalfigure...} {a}
  {\externalfigure...} {b}
