That got me looking in the right direction.
I should have dded a macro definition to
graphictextdirective which I had not. It was
in the
   verbatimtex
   \documentclass{article}
   ....
   \begin{document}
   etex;
preamble. Remarkably the omission of the macro definition
caused no errors.

Thanks for the help.

BTW: I am designing a logo and am looking for some
fonts that don't look thin but thick. probably they
should be sans serif. Any suggestions?
