Hi,

I have a problem (probably my own fault, but I have no idea 
where to start debugging) I was playing with m-cweb.

this is the file a.tex:
-----------------
\mathrel?
-----------------

tex, etex and pdfetex all say something like this:

! Missing $ inserted.
<inserted text> 
                $

but cont-en (pdfetex) says:
! Undefined control sequence.
l.1 \mathrel?

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14h-released-20010417-2.1 (Web2C 7.3.3.1)
entering extended mode
(./a.tex{pdftex.cfg}

ConTeXt  ver: 2001.4.9  fmt: 2001.6.20  int: english  mes: english

the format was made with texexec --alone --make en 

How can this be?

right, since \mathrel is a math comand

you have an unmatched \unprotect somewhere [maybe in cont-sys.tex] which
means that ? is a letter and part of the cs, 

\mathrel ? or \mathrel{?} will work ok, 

but best if to locate the unmatched \unprotect -- \protect
