I know where I want to place the graphic in relation to the other text. since I am already in double column mode subdividing the column further would be difficult. I would have to go into 4 column mode temporarily and then back to two column --- not a very practical approach! I will try again with the \startfiguretext command as described in ``..an Excursion''. A side question.
