Hi Bruce,
I was getting the same thing, and I think it is because the perl script
depends on find the environmental variables, especially TEXMF, and does not
look at kpathsea. Try exporting (if you are on linux):
export TEXMF=/usr/share/texmf
or whatever your TeX root is. This should allow the script to continue...
