Yes, use \definetyping instead. Here is an example:
\definetyping
[TTinput]
[before={\startframedtext[width=\makeupwidth,background=screen,backgroundscreen=.8]},
after={\stopframedtext}]
\starttext
\startTTinput
test
\stopTTinput
\stoptext
