Sigh. me too.
This is a recent change in my distro, I think.
try adding this line:
\usetypescript[adobekb][ec]
This causes the mapping from ec-uplr8a:
\starttypescript [adobekb] [ec]
\definefontsynonym [ec-uplr8a] [pplr8t] [encoding=ec]
...which you should have on your system.
Sorry (especially to Patrick!) for being misleading earlier. My head was
still in TeXLive mode.
