Hi all,

there is a new plant in the Garden:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_on_Excursion%2C_translations

It gathers translations of the beginner's manual ConTeXt on Excursion
(authors Ton Otten and Hans Hagen). Currently there exist Dutch,
English, and Czech versions. Czech version is a team work of translators
(Ján Buša, Jiří Hrbek, Martina Plachá, Petr Tesařík, and Vít Zýka)
supported by Czechoslovac TUG (CSTUG). We use as a model the English
version (although the original is the Dutch one). A reader can find
several additional sections dealing with localization and information
sources.

Non Czech readers have also some benefic as a side effect of this
project. The English version was slightly actualized and fixed some
bugs. All versions are acompanied by actual macro syntax and listed in
the command index.

Sources of all three versions are stored on the public SVN repository as
a part of the ConTeXt manual project
(https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextman/), administrated by
Taco. There is a makefile for an easy manual generation. It is ready for
adding new stuff/actualizing/fixing bugs and even for new language
translation. On the Garden page we can find breaf instructions for that.
If you have any question, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Best reading
Vit

stable enough for translation in others languages, right ?

Hi Vit,

Any specific reasons why Chapter 12 of the old manual describing
\setupparagraphs was removed. I understand that the same result can be
achieved by tabulate, but I am just wondering what was the rantionale
behind removing paragraphs.

Does that mean that I can change some parts of the manual (I had some
comments on the wiki page for corrections). How do you plan to keep
the changes syncronous across translations?

well, it may make sense to discuss what to kick out and what to add

e.g. paragraphs is less useful than tabulate and friends

Look at two new chapters in Czech version ma-cb-cz-screen.pdf
   page 41 Czech/Slovac text typesetting
   page A Information sources
(I believe the content is roughly understandeble without Czech knowledge.)

If it will be considered interesting I can translate it to English.

Some other updates would help. For example I tried to turn a newbie on
to Context and pointed him to "Excursion." He tried to run a test
program using the command:
context myfile
as given in the manual on page 5 and got a bad result. That command
doesn't work any more. So he gave up on Context and turned to LaTeX
instead.

Hi Taco,

I've registered the project to translate it into Chinese. Anyhow, I have
some questions now:
1, I'm using WinXP, so I downloaded gnu make and other core files for
windows from gnuwin32.sourceforge.net. I don't know if it will work well.
But I think I can compile it manually.
2, When I run "make en" or manually compile ma-cb-en, I got an error that
\secretsetup is undefined. I think my ConTeXt is new enough:
ConTeXt ver: 2007.04.17 12:51 MKII fmt: 2007.4.20 int: english/english
3, I've never used svn before, so I'm afraid if I upload my source to the
svn server, would it harm other files? I only made change to makefile and
create a folder called cn (for Chinese).

It has nothing to do with your system's ConTeXt; it's defined in
t-setup.tex in the contextman directory, but it can't be found because
the compilation takes place in some subdirectory (like en/). You can work
around it but setting TEXINPUTS to the appropriate location (with a
trailing colon! Don't forget the colon.), although I'm not sure how it
works under Windows.

It should probably be set in the Makefile anyway.

I think it shouldn't, but I leave the details of the commit for others
to explain. Please do it first so that I can make the necessary changes
for French ;-)

In any case, please please please consider using the letters “zh”
which is the code for the Chinese language, and not for the country,
China. It's bad enough that ConTeXt tags British English with the
international code for Ukrainian ... ;-)

  祝你翻译成功!

Hi Arthur,

Thanks for you explanation, suggestion and encouragement. I hope you'll
finish your translation soon too. (I'm so solecistic that I can't speak
French :( )

I'm trying to find where to set the username and password in TortoiseSVN, so
you may need to wait a little more.

Hi Arthur,

this shouldn't be a problem. ConTeXt is looking for project files in the parent
directory and this is where ma-cb lies in our case.

I don't like the current file structure made by Vit, generic should better be
renamed to images. I prefer myself to have the project files in the
same directory
as the project files (we can work with \usepath to input the components) and
we can also move all environments and modules to a new subdirectory.

Vit write the makefile. Is all of that actually make syntax? wow.

I would think so too. But if it is all proper makefile stuff, then
it will run fine with the gnuwin toolkit.

It is (supposed to be) impossible to mess up version controlled
files completely, after all: that is the point of using a version
control system in the first place. At worst, you can create some
temporary chaos that an expert needs to look at.

I firmly agree with Arthur on the zh vs. cn issue, btw.

Best, Taco

Yes, it is; I experienced it myself just before Zhichu reported it to
the list. I was told ConTeXt was supposed to search for files in the
parent directory, too, but as it apparently didn't for t-setup.tex I
came up with setting TEXINPUTS, which is of course a hack, but at least
it enabled me to compile the manual. I didn't investigate further last
night.

  I use ConTeXt ver: 2007.03.19 11:20 MKII fmt: 2007.3.24 int: english/english

Hi Arthur,

I wasn't able to test my answer because I use myself a different file structure
for the beginners manual and never encountered this problem.

The better solution rather than making a TEXINPUTS entry is to put the
setup module
in the third party directory in your local TeX tree.

Gruß

I guess the problem is with \doiffileelse in ma-cb-setups.tex:

# \doiffileelse{t-setup.tex}
# {\usemodule[setup]} % third party t-setup.tex
#   {\usemodule[set-11]}

As it is (without tweaking TEXINPUTS or installing t-setup.tex
manually), t-setup.tex isn't found in the parent directory, so
x-set-11.tex is loaded in its place.

How is \doiffileelse supposed to search for files exactly?

Hi everybody

I'm sorry that I haven't upload anything except the makefile. So Authur, you
can adopt it to French now. But Hans' \horizontalchineseunicodeglyph macro
has some conflict with \starttyping . . . \stoptyping environment. I checked
for like two days and comment the following lines:
=========================
\ifx\nextutoken\relax
\insertunicodeglyph
\else
=========================
and the corresponding \fi, then it's OK now. I do the translation after work
during workdays, so it'll be very slow.

I don't know much about the TEXINPUTS thing. since I got error, I copied all
files from the parent folder to my working folder, which is called "zh."
It's a mess now, and I'll purge all the auxillary files after I finish it.

Why is it done this way? Isn't t-setup always supposed to be
distributed with the sources. Why not simply

\environment t-setup

If a file is being used for only one project, it should be an
environment file. If it will be used in multiple projects, it should
be a module.

Wolfgang, do you think that t-setup.tex can be added as x-set-13.tex,
or maybe even overwrite x-set-11.tex? (I have not read it carefully to
understand what are the enhancements that it provides).

> How is \doiffileelse supposed to search for files exactly?

Try to open the file for reading. If the file can be read, then read
the file, else do the else part. The check for file etc is done using
TeX's \immediate\openin\scratchread \filename, so there is no
searching for parent directories. The \project and \environment macros
have to make some effort to read files in parent directories.

Aditya

Hi Aditya,

the module is a replacement for x-set-11 and and tries to solve a few
problem x-set-11 has, like generating a index with all commands used in
the current file.

It provides also a few like generating a index entry without showing
the command in the running text or generating own texts for
envronments, like a setup command for "\startFOO ... \stopFOO" (the
FOO is not a placeholder, you can realy show FOO in the output from
\shortsetup).

This should be wikified.

Thanks to both of you for your answers; is there any objection to
replacing the spurious code in ma-cb-setups.tex with the line Aditya
wrote (\environment t-setup.tex)? Vít?

I tested it and it works as expected (without any special
arrangements); obviously this is better than the \doiffileelse test.

I would suggest renaming t-setup.tex to something like ma-cb-x-set.tex
to be consistent.

Hi Arthur,

use \usemodule[setup] and not \environment, the file is a module and
not a environment, it can be used for more document and is not bound to
the beginners manual.

The test is useless, because t-setup is neccessary for \secretsetup and
you will get "undefined control sequence" if the file is not found.
