I don't need it, I just discovered that /etc/profile in suse-10.3 sets it even without any tex-package installed. Before that, I had been pretty sure, that only TEXMF, TEXMFCNF and TEXMFCACHE were set. It's also a runtime issue. Try setting TEXINPUTS=somepath, and see what's happening with MKIV. But you're right, since there is no "troubleshooting" page, I'll put it first on "installation instructions".
