Hi Hans,
the following code still produces an en dash instead of a hyphen.
\setuplayout [width=1.5cm]
\starttext
composed||word\par % produces an en dash
\def\compoundhyphen{-}
composed||word\par % workaroud from Thomas, produces hyphen
\stoptext
