1. You could help too by supplying a MWE.

2. Did you try setting the penalties inside the columns
   environment? (They are zeroed with \startcolumns.)

  \startcolumns[n=2,distance=1cm,balance=no,tolerance=stretch,ntop=2]
    \clubpenalty10000
    \widowpenalty10000
