With \definehead[chapter][section] you set the structurelevel of \section to that of \chapter, essentially creating a synonym with a slightly different style. This is guaranteed to mess up your lists (e.g. toc). To verify that, execute this snippet: \definehead[chapter][section] \starttext \chapter{foo} \section{bar} \chapter{baz} \stoptext Observe that \section and \chapter now share a counter. Btw. to avoid confusion better create your own set of macros (\definehead[myexperimentalsection][section]) instead of overriding pre-defined functionality.
