Thanks, Hans. In my test file I now have

\unexpanded\def\ {\mathortext\normalspaceprimitive\space}

x.\ x,\ x\ x\crlf

\stoptext

Unfortunately, I do not see any effect in the output (under MKII).   
The space after a period looks the same as the space after “.\ ”,  
though it should be bigger.
