First this: finding out how to create oldstyle pagenumbers in the center
below the text, I loaded the great (in both meanings of the word) manual
in Acrobat viewer. As I find it hard to learn and act from a screen
manual, I printed the pages (61-68) dealing with the subject. Half of the
printed page is navigational screen info. I guess I must get/use another
manual file for this method?

Talking to Hans, I learned that these margins geting pushed off the
cutting lines can happen and it's only a problem if the user wants to put
things in these margins. My *current* settings have the margins pushed
over the cutting lines on *both* sides. When the margins are shown with
\toon... then this can be distressing, but since I don't plan to put any
notes in the margins of this current book I won't worry about it for the
time being. In MAPS 20, there are several examples of the same thing
happening, for instance on page 91.

Remaining posible problem: the page as I have it currently is not
vertically centered (I think the "kopwit" is too much, compared to the
white on the bottom of the page), buit I'll play some more to see where
I'm wrong.

My current settings are:

In my file (custom made by Taco, thanks!) named FONT-FG.TEX it says:

[...]

"tnrexp" refers to the postscript amf/pfb file for the so called "expert
set" that I once bought at FONSHOP in Belgium for completing my existing
Times font set.

I hope / trust that "my" oldstyle does grow and shrink with the current

Indeed it accepts 

 at <n>pt
 scaled <number>  (\magstep returns a number)

and non tex: 

 sa <number> 

the later meaning scaled at (so:

  define...[12pt]...[  sa 2 ...] 

means 2*12pt

which is handy when you feed a list of sizes.

All documented modules are manual sat the same time. About 50% is
documented that way.

Only one page but it canbe overruled by later settings.

Thanks! Now I think I have two macros (I thought up the first one myself)
to do the trick:

\def\onum#1{{\oldstyle #1}} %  for use of \onum{123} 
\def\os{\oldstyle}          %  for use of \os{123}

The second one (from you) is clearly simpler.

I'll probably enhavce the chapter command with such an option soon. I plan
to have running headers on left and right pages, the left page giving the
autor's name, the right page giving the title (all chapters in the book
are about authors and the novels they wrote, and the chapter titles have
the autor's name and the book that will be reviewed in the chapter. This
is probably good logically constant stuff to devise a macro for chapter
titles like

\hoofdstuk{
            \auteur{Maarten 't Hart}
            \boek{Een vlucht regenwulpen}
             }

which must typeset the author's name in upper caps bold, and the title of
the book in bold on a new line, pasing on the author's name for display on
the top of left sided pages and the novel's title on top of the right
sided pages, with none of these headers on the chapter's first page.

I expect this to be an interesting but tricky trip to accomplish so I'll
postpone that until I have several chapters ready.

Any suggestions will be welcome in the meantime though...

In tha old LaTeX file, I needed the hspace to put the logo in the middle

Then nothing seems to happen. I get the TEXUTIL screen with the options
but no files are created. I also doubt that TEXUTIL could find and fire up
a GostScript on my PC somewhere.

\oldstyle is from plain.tex and basically just switches to \fam1.
\os does almost the same, but uses context's font mechanism 
(\normalizedbodysize\cm\mi). In general the following trick
works:

  \definealternativestyle [oud] [\oldstyle]  []
  \starttekst
  Er zijn \oud{7} kinderen in klas {\oud 3}.
  \stoptekst

Oldstyle should be part of the encoding-specific commands, just like 
the accents. Now I have had to redefine \oldstyle for Frans to get 
the above definition to work. (font-fg.tex says: \let\oldstyle\sc)

I admit that this is not handy, but it was decided that the second half

Looks ok.

The must was meant for your specific document. You only need to specify
what you want. The defaults automatically scale with the papersize, so 

\setuppaperformat[A5]

indeed gives an acceptable layout to start with.

I suppose Taco defined \oldstyle for you. Actually you could have said: 

  letter=mediaeval

because this is defined as (see font-ini)

  \definealternativestyle [mediaeval] [\os]  []

So, if you say \def\os{\oldstyle}, you can use this.

All commands defined as alternative style act both ways! So you can say:

yes, but how about adding in cont-sys.tex

furthermore, specifying the extension is not actually needed here, only
for metapost illustrations (which have numbers as extensions).

No: [breedte=4cm] ; the method is only uses for special cases, where tex
should use the type to find the dimensions and the method to include the
graphic (in pdftex: a metapost fig is scanned as eps for dimensions and
converted by tex using a method). You could have said type=eps, but that
is default, so it can be omitted

The good news is that in the next version (which is tested by some folks
now) 
you don't need to specify types and methods etc. When you say: 

  \externalfigure[lsylogo][width=4cm]

Context starts looking for the best suit: outlines first, bitmaps last,
using several method for scanning dimensions (direct parsing,
texutil.tuf parsing or eventually calling texutil itself); multiple
directories can be searched etc etc. Figures are stored in the object
mechanism and reused when possible.

I never noticed.

For instance. But first correct the page:

  texutil --figures --epspage yourfile 

(get the latest version or let me know if I should mail it): 

  texutil --figures --epspage --epstopdf yourfile

That one lets GhostScript do the job (using Sebastian R.'s page
correction trick).

Long message with a batch of ordered questions...

First this: I have several (MAPS) ConTeXt manuals opened 
      on a chair nearby. I'm also lucky to have an old 
      big printed manual version 960122 at hand. The MAPS 
      manuals are pleasant appatizers but not so handy for 
      looking things up. For instance, in the table of 
      contents in MAPS 19 defining commands is said to be 
      on page 85, but that page is not in that MAPS. The 
      next manual in MAPS has a new page numbering and no 
      table of contents...
      I couldn't find the ConTeXt syntax replacing my 
      familiar \Large, \Huge etcetera. Taco told me this is 
      {\tfa foobar} for a small word "foobar" and then tfb, 
      tfc etcetera for bigger characters. This \tfa...e 
      command is not in the command list in the big PDF 
      manual though. The old paper manual showed (page 111) 
      that big characters can be printed (I need those for 
      the title page), but it's not shown how that is done. 
      The example "Grote Woorden" is shown as result, but 
      without the macro prividing that result. 
      (In de PDF version of the manual, clicking on the 
      left green marginal marker for page 102 showed the 
      command, though!) 
      So, perseverance helps ;=}

PS: I enjoy this process of learning ConTeXt. It's a sort of TeX adventure
game for me and as much fun as getting a new PC is. New possibillities!

Nothing. When you show the layout (pageframe) the margins can stick into
right edge, which is ok. The simples way to get a symmetrical page is: 

\setuplayout[backspace=2cm,width=middle]

Frans phoned me about this problem, and here is what we discussed. 

When setting up a page, the margins don't count in the calculations!
Their dimensions are only used in backgrounds, breaking margin text,
alignment etc. 

The main dimensions are: backspace/topspace (rugwit/kopwit etc), width
and height.  

Use \showframe (\toonkader) for showing the page layout. Beware not to
confuse the margins with the backspace!

Right. I show four pages because one should be able to check:

single sided output 
double sided output 
double sided output with single sided layout

The four pages make sense on a duplex printer, where one should be able
to see a spread too.

I have to admit that I never use \showlayout, I always use \showframe.

This is a feature, actually. It helps to decide whether spreads are 
OK. If you want only one page, try:

\toonkader
\tooninstellingen
\pagina

instead of \toonlayout

I don't know what is wrong with the cropmarks.

First go at book with ConTeXt, questions

After producing a number of books using 4TEX/LaTeX I want to make a fresh
start and go at it with ConTeXt for the next book. This is a collection of
interviews and reviews bundled under the title "De kunst van het
schrijven" which, in translation, would be "The art of writing" which
coincides nicely with the title of Knuth's Art...

I'm running into the expected problems sooner than I expected. I use crop
marks and the page that's displayed when I print the DVI file (using DVIPS
from the 4TEX CD) shows that the crop marks are too far to the right. the
page falls off the crop marks about 4mm to the left (page gets cut off)
and it fails to meet the crop mark's right cutting line by about 3mm.

Also, I wonder why I get 4 identical pages showing the layout with the
test-tect on the 5th page with the following input file:

De gasten hebben in de salonboot op het benedendek gezamenlijk een
keuken, een grote huiskamer, een eetkamer met leestafel en tv. In het
hoogseizoen zal het wel een gezellige boel zijn. Op het bovendek is er
een ruime slaapkamer (voor de kapitein, met een ruim tweepersoonsbed) en
een stuk of twaalf hutten met elk twee smalle korte britsen langs de
wand en een wastafeltje annex opklapbaar tafeltje ertussenin. De
patrijspoort heeft een hor, wat vast wel handig is tegen de muggen in de
zomer. Helaas heb ik te weinig slaapmuts gedronken, want ik slaap
slecht. De andere gasten pitten lekker, te horen aan het innig tevreden
gesnurk dat zich in de loop van de nacht een weg door de wanden zaagt
--- het lijkt steeds dichterbij te komen. Bovendien is er in een van de
aangrenzende gebouwen iemand erg boos over iets dat hem is aangedaan. Of
zit er iemand in de kiel vast, per ongeluk ingesloten? Ik hoor doffe
klappen die ons gestrande schip doen schudden. Af en toe lijkt de
gevangene zich te kunnen bevrijden, het gebouw geeft kreunend toe, maar
dan houdt het stampen op. Een halfuur later echter vat de onbekende weer
moed, de sloopwerkzaamheden beginnen opnieuw en er klinken harde,
sombere dreunen. `Wuthering Heights' op de Veluwe... De volgende ochtend
hoor ik hetzelfde geluid als ik het aanpalende stallengebouw binnenga.
Dat is het dus: een ontevreden paard!
