Thank you for the response.
I type:
sudo mtxrun -script fonts --list
and I get:
sudo: unable to execute /usr/bin/mtxrun: No such file or directory
but the file is there in /usr/bin/:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 285223 2008-05-26 09:32 /usr/bin/mtxrun*
I don't know if this help you, but a "texexec --check" gives me:
TeXExec | current distribution: web2c
TeXExec | context source date: 2008.05.21 15:21
I am using linux-ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)
thank you

Considering that mtxrun exist, I suspect the interpreter of the script does
not exist, which is texlua on my system:
$ head -1 /usr/bin/mtxrun
#!/usr/bin/texlua
So the mtxrun script should be run by texlua, which is again a symlink to
luatex:
$ ls -l /usr/bin/texlua
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2009-05-07 11:26 /usr/bin/texlua -> luatex
Perhaps you don't have luatex installed, or you are missing this symlink?

Hi Ciro,
> How do I solve the problem then?
You should probably just install the luatex package (IIRC you were running
Ubuntu, which should ship it, Debian does at least).

I installed lutex 0.28.0-2
Then I ran the command that Khaled told me, and I got
% sudo mtxrun -script fonts --list
MtxRun | error unable to identify cnf file
MtxRun | error unable to identify cnf file
MtxRun | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known)
MtxRun | unknown script: fonts
still something missing (the fonts script), and the cnf file
Any advice?
thank you

I just installed the minimals from the link given by Mauricio, and followed
instructions for the linux installation.
I still get:
%sudo mtxrun -script fonts --list
MtxRun | error unable to identify cnf file
MtxRun | error unable to identify cnf file
MtxRun | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known)
MtxRun | unknown script: fonts
BTW, I have the folliwng environment variables related to tex:
% env
TEXMFOS=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-linux
TEXMFCACHE=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-cache
SHELL=/bin/bash
TEXMFLOCAL=/usr/share/texmf-local
PATH=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin:/home/ciro/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.13/bin/
CTXMINIMAL=yes
TEXMFFONTS=/usr/share/texmf-fonts
TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c
TEXMFMAIN=/usr/share/texmf
thank you,

I am getting closer to the solution. This is my new environment:

TEXMFOS=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-linux
TEXMFCACHE=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-cache
TEXMFPROJECT=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-project

TEXMFDBS=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf
TEXMFEXTRA=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-extra
MPMEMS=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-linux/web2c
HOMETEXMF=/nonexist
TEXMF=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf
TEXMFFONTS=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-fonts
RUBYLIB=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/ruby:
TEXMFCNF=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf/web2c
TEXMFMAIN=/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf
OLDPWD=/home/ciro/context
but running the mtxrun I get:
% mtxrun --script fonts --list
MtxRun | unknown script 'fonts.lua' or 'mtx-fonts.lua'
any suggestion?
thank you

do you run an older copy of mtxrun or luatools? if so, try
mtxrun --selfupdate
luatools --selfupdate
or copy the scripts from script/context/lua to you bin path
maybe some older tex in your bin path?

what is fonts.lua ?

there must be something completely wrong with your system
if you install the minimals and then run the setuptex script the
minimals should work in complete isolation and well ... work

better do a
cp mtxrun.lua ...binpath.../mtxrun

[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 2344 bytes --]
the mtxrun file and the luatools file in the bin path are the same as the
ones in the lua directory.
I ran diff and got nothing. For instance:
% *diff ~/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua
~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/luatools*
I copied them anyways:
*%cp mtxrun.lua ~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/mtxrun
% cp luatools.lua ~/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/luatools
*
and:
*%which mtxrun*
/home/ciro/context/tex/texmf-linux/bin/mtxrun
*
*then:
*
