sure, i nailed down the problem to a patch for tex live that taco and i
cooked up last weekend and that somehow works there but spoils the
current beta

on mac snow leopard it works again. Kerning on Adobe Fonts is also ok now, however it is not exactly the same as before. Letters attached to T are to near. See:

Does the directory exist? If there is nothing important there, just
delete it.

Hi Hans,
I just updated to the latest minimal, and everything works perfectly on my MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.3.
I get:
LuaTeX version 60, LuaTeX revision 1, (LuaTeX date stamp 2010042810),
ConTeXt version 2010.06.15 17:06.
I haven't noticed any kerning problems with the usual fonts I use, and the issue reported by Thomas S. doesn't show up for me.
However, I notice that the version I have runs much faster than the previous ones, especially in mkii mode: is this because you have done something magic, or am I being too tired and slow minded? :-)
In any case, many many thanks…
Best regards: OK

a few path definitions are optimized which might make kpse faster (mkii
uses kpse); the minimal trees are definitely faster than a full tex
install (way less files)
also, mtxrun is the official stub for all scripts (replacing the ruby
texmfstart) it might also be faster in the startup

Hi,
The current windows version on the garden is broken, so don't update for
a few days. The binaries will be fixed asap (but these are not the
easiest days for this kind of things).

One of these days the minimals repository will be moved to the machine
that runs the garden. After that we will change the scripts to find an
active mirror. (if you do have the basic bin dir alrwady you can use
another mirror with --server=...)

It is indeed somewhat complicated. Changes are needed in first-setup.sh
as well as in mtx-update.lua. To complicate matters, one of the first
things that happens in first-setup.sh is to retrieve a fresh and
unaltered mtx-update.lua. My naïve recipe follows:
1. change contextgarden.net to metatex.org on line 99 of first-setup.sh
2. run once, which fails, but updates mtx-update.lua
3. comment out line 99 of first-setup.sh, to prevent further updates of
scripts
4. change line 534 of mtx-update.lua to contain metatex.org instead of
contextgarden.net
run first-update.sh again, this time hopfully with success.
May I suggest that the version of mtx-update.lua that can be retrieved
from metatex.org contains references to that server and not
contextgarden.net. I realize that then it is no longer a mirror, but on
the other hand it may be useful when contextgarden is down.

I may be dumb... but I can't figure out how to change the mirror.
minimals.contextgarden.net seems to be hard-coded in a number of places.
Help please?
Best,
Mica

Hi,
I uploaded a new beta but please don't update the minimals as it looks
like the texmf-context/tex tree gets lost on the server

ah ok, now I see.
My PATH env var. has not a TeXLive or minimals path by default.
Every time I need a TeXLive or minimals, I open a shell and setup the its path
and I never mix the paths --- just open another shell in another
working spaces (In linux I use 16 working spaces)
or another tab in gnome-terminal.
In this way I can work with different TeXLive and different minimals
For example I have under /opt/luatex/texlive
2008
2008-texmf-local
2009
2009-texmf-local
2010
2010-texmf-local
and ~10 different minimals under opt/luatex
Of course this can be a problem with editors that expect just one
path, but I use emacs, so...

If I need lualatex, I just push the TeXLive bin directory to the front
of my path. (exact opposite of Pontus' approach).

I have, in addition to the new attempt (context), the working
installation I'm presently using (/Applications/newtex) and an older
version (Applications/mytex). Both have their mtxrun and luatools:
./Applications/mytex/bin/mtxrun
./Applications/mytex/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/mtxrun
./Applications/newtex/bin/mtxrun
./Applications/newtex/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/mtxrun
./Users/bonasia/context/bin/mtxrun
./Users/bonasia/context/tex/texmf-context/scripts/context/stubs/unix/mtxrun
./Users/bonasia/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/mtxrun
I tried the new installation under /Applications and then in my home
directory, with the procedure "sh ./first-setup.sh" method ("simple
instructions for installing on Unix-like systems"), and got the same
result, namely:
- For mkii the formats have to be made, but then it works
- For mkiv, luatools --selfupdat, mtxrun --selfupdate and context give:
bonasia:test$ luatools --selfupdate
LuaTools | fileio: to be replaced old script
/Users/bonasia/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/luatools
LuaTools | fileio: unable to locate new script
LuaTools |
LuaTools | runtime: 0.051 seconds
bonasia:test$ mtxrun --selfupdate
MTXrun | fileio: to be replaced old script
/Users/bonasia/context/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/mtxrun
MTXrun | fileio: unable to locate new script
bonasia:test$ context
MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua'

Just a remark. I didn't touch the Mac binaries for a long while (and
my mac is already resting in peace, so I cannot test).
Have any new binaries been released in the meantime?
I usually remove the "--make" switch (or it may be enough to call
--keep switch once?) to prevent remaking formats at any given time if
no updates are there. Is it possible that the make switch is turned
out on your computer as well?
(Sorry, but I really cannot test what's going on on mac, though it's a
bit strange that it behaves differently.)

hmm , never see this.
I believe that if you make a fresh minimals install and you have the same
error,
it's a minimals problem.

Assuming minimals-beta as root dir, I have them only under the cache, ie

Yes. And the error: Fatal Error : Your format does not match the
base files!

They exist and are found in texmf-osx-intel/bin

You mean that on the mac:
luatools --generate
context --make
does not create mkiv format. Do you get an error? Is the correct luatools
being used? (i.e., does "which luatools" and "which luatex" point to the
correct directory)

Always a good idea.

Yes, bash. And, as I said, after remaking the formats (shouldn't be
necessary) mkii, but not mkiv, works on the mac. It's no problem for me:
I never update the most recent working installation; I always install
from scratch and only delete the old one when everything is working.
Cheers, Jörg

Are you using the same shell in both. I vaguely remember that in some
shells you need "source setuptex" while in others you need ". setuptex".

Installing the minimals on ubuntu works with "first-setup.sh" without
remaking the formats, in both mkII and mkiv.
Installing them on my mac (10.5.8) (same procedure), mkii only works
after remaking the formats, whereas remaking them for mkiv didn't help
(Fatal Error : Your format does not match the base files!).
Shouldn't first-setup.sh behave the same way on both computers?
Cheers, Jörg
