Ah so tikz uses both drivers. 

@Hans, so the validate function should be:

local function validate(n)
    return not (
           find(n,"latex")
     -- or find(n,"lualatex")
        or find(n,"plain")
        or find(n,"optex")
     -- or find(n,"luatex")
     -- or find(n,"pdftex")
    )
end
