Can I switch off the grid setting for >all headers? I'm cleaning up my overful mail buffer and ran into this question. Concerning grid, i happen to be working on more advanced figure placement in columns and just ran some 300 page 500 fig sample with success. So, things are improvind -) When in grid mode (multi columns) many commands will honor the grid. When not, you may use: \startlinecorrection whatever content \stoplinecorrection [this is also advised when embedding framed thingies, \startlinecorrection \externalfigure[...] \stoplinecorrection This command does a rather good job on getting things visually spaced well. [stable for years now but not that trivial]. You may also try: \snaptogrid\vbox{...} (or hbox) If you look into core-grd.tex, you will find more details, on how to snap to the top/bottom/center as well as corrections and so. Did you try \showgrid already? Some day soon I will start doing more experiments with pdftex grid snapping btw. So, expect more.
