In \startlines, the endofline char is made active and gets a special
meaning. So, 
as long as you say: 

\startlines
some text\index{one long line}
some more text 
\stoplines

things will work ok. I can look into a fix later, but you should keep in
mind that in \startlines end of lines will always be special.
