The magic is in \setuppagenumbering[style=], currently it is set to
style=normal, which forces normal fonts, but setting it to empty is better.
I'll change the source default [core-sec.tex];

[\pagenumber] would have worked, since [pagenumber] goes into another
machinery. 

So, you may consider it a bug -)
