This has to do with the fact that glyps may stick out of their bounding
boxes. 

If you use btex ... etex, you may want to add a \strut, otherwise: 

picture p ; p := nullpicture ; 
addto p also "abc" infont "somefont" ; 
setbounds p to boundingbox p enlarged 1pt ; 
draw p ;
