The style switching key accepts a font switch as well as a command, and cap
is a command that upcases it sargument. Since upcasing is kind of tricky,
cap only works when applied to expanded text. To illustrate this: 

\uppercase{abc}

\uppercase{abc \getvalue{SomeCommand}}

\uppercase{abcd\"efg}

This is why a real cap is better, so "sc" in stead of cap, although you
then loose some features like font adaption.
