Currently yes, but you may say:
\def\noftabcolumns{20}
or in (pdf)etex
\def\noftabcolumns{3000}
Since the max number of columns is limited in tex, I should use a box stack
[slower] but i can default to a larger value for etex. What is the max
needed?
