Strange indeed, took me some time to track it down; this is due to some new
math stuff deep down, where I do a preroll without blocking inserts, in 

  core-mat.tex

you can add the 

  \holdinginserts 

line.   

\def\getlastlinewidth% will use the new otr installer
  {\ifinner
     \global\lastlinewidth=\!!zeropoint
   \else
     \bgroup
     \holdinginserts=1 % patch ! ! ! ! !
     \output{\global\setbox1=\vbox{\unvbox\normalpagebox}}
     \eject

PS. This concerns last line before display math spacing optimization, for
which some dirty tricks are needed.
