The attached file presents my latest ideas on tooltips,
with some tests (in Italian, but even if you don't
understand what's written, it doesn't matter). The only
point is: displayed formulas don't work. Any ideas on why?
(the relative text is commented out).

Ehm ... did you uncomment the \placeformula ... part?
I commented it to distribute a functional file. If
you uncomment it, you should get (that is, I get) a
"Missing {" error.

I don't :-)
Different context version, probably. Mine is:

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525-2.1 (extended
mode)
ConTeXt ver: 2000.9.30 fmt: 2000.10.13 int: english mes: english

Taco has a more recent math core module -)

I'll upload that one later, that is, when David A.'s files run ok.

Ouch! I hate preferences :-)

Please also add the corrections to the Italian interface.

Btw, do you usually inform the mailing list when new beta or stable
versions are available at the web site? And: which web site has
the latest?

Hey, what's this myterious (extended mode) that your pdfeTeX reports? Mine
is the same version, same release but has (Web2C 7.3.1) instead of
(extended mode).

Just curious

Well, I cheated a bit. The actual console message is:

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-14f-released-20000525-2.1 (Web2C
7.3.2x)
entering extended mode
{/usr/share/texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg}

ConTeXt ver: 2001.1.19 fmt: 2001.2.10 int: english mes: english

"entering extended mode" means that pdfetex actually behaves as eTeX,
not as TeX82.

It is *possible* btw. that the example tooltip worked ok just because
of that. I don't think I have the math core patch installed on this
machine.

Maybe I *do* have the math patch installed then? Anyway, my context
deviates from the distribution regularly ;)

... and now for something completely different ...

I needed some extensions to the number conversions provided by context
(like character conversion for numbers > 26, which is broken :() nd
the attached file is what I came up with. It's rough, but maybe someone
will be interested enough to make requests? Here's a usage example/demo
(\maxcount == TeX's max integer divided by 26):

%&cont-en

\input radix

\edef\maxcount{41297762}

When you use fmtutil, make sure that a * is put in front of the format
(should be there already).

etex is no etex when not forced in etex mode. Some code is more robust in
etex mode than non etex mode; context recognizes the mode and pops in other
code when suitable.

I'l have a look at it. A few (quick) remarks:

- is the commalist really needed?
- can we use etex expr to create a fully expandable alternative

also:

- i will encapsulate this into something \define

[wang lei and i are working on some unicode remapping commands and fully
expandable converters are really needed in some cases; this is why
\(C|c)haracter(s) cannot be replaced that easily).

Well, taco is a special case, a special user, gets special treatment, etc.
Such is life for the early adopters who've read the whole source. -)

I think so, yes. (the one in \converttoradix). The
macro \buildcommalist that is part of \convertfromradix has a badly
chosen name, it (currently) doesn't involve lists at all.

I intend to create a version without size limits, and that means
I need a way to process partial numbers safely.

Life would be a lot easier if TeX had a \remainder and a \modulo
operation. This code looks a lot like assembly programming =)

Unlikely for \converttoradix, but maybe doable from \convertfromradix.

What *precisely* do you need?

Wait for a while, there are still many many improvements possible.

There is a din and mod macro somewhere in the syst modules that way can
generalize.

I'm doing a lot of advertisement to ConTeXt, both in and out of the TeX
community, since ConTeXt is the format best suited for non-scientific
documents (the other are too technically related). Does this make me
elegible to preferred updates? :-)

I wanted to know, so as to make sure I'm always in sync with the main
distribution.

Well, in many cases the beta is the latest, and i normally update the bate
every couple of days. Versions that taco and i exchange in the meantime
always concern tricky things that we neede to test for interference [i know
the context source kin dof by head and taco can run tex the program in his
head]. So, normally users are not that out of sync. [esp not when one
regularly updates beta's]

There was a time that beta's were more private and when we move to cvs like
things, they will be moving targets.

Sometimes macros are developped in the cause of a project, in which case
they can go public after a while, but not in the process of development.

Also, some experimental code only makes sense to certain users, like
specific unicode things that are tested with wang lei who uses them.

I only check the site every two or three months ... so I guess I'm out
of sync ... do the betas include all the patches proposed in this
list, like the one for the missing / at the end of the URLs, etc?

yes, normally all patches (and some more) is part of a new version. One
reason for this update was that

(1) the next beta will have an improved encoding / regime support
(2) ones after that will have extended otr support

Both of these are typical beta stuff (although here we use beta's for day
to day production).
