I have only one context [actually a texmf,texmf-local,texmf-source but the
last one is my home tree] so for me beta = current. My collegues use the
mswin texmf tree [there we have texmf,texmf-local,texmf-mswin,texmf-linux]
on the linux server [that itself uses the linux tree] which are always a
bit behind [i normally only update the server if new functionality is needed].
