pickup can be used with delimited macros, like in 

\def\blabla#1\end{...} 

pickup -> {\blabla} {\end} 

In the xml manual you can find an example of table handling: 

  \bTR \bTD \eTD \eTR 

can in principle be handled by pickups, but how about nested tables? there
nested pickups are your friend [little code but tricky macros btw]
