Taco probably knows this best, since it depends a bit where you prevent it
[in some places, tex rebuild ligatures]. 

I would say f{}i as unsafe option, and f\kern0pt i as safe option

or 

\def\nolig{\kern\zeropoint}

f\nolig i

BTW, \/ is not a good choice
