Hi David,

Amstex is actually a complete package in itself, so I suppose you refer
to the math part (not the general structuring and layout part).

Currently Taco (who is using context at kluwer to process math oriented
smgl) is collecting al kind of math things as they appear in their
periodicals. So, apart from amstex functionality, more specialized
fetaures are needed.

When this inventory is made, as well as additional funcionality is
specified, it will be turned into a math module. (Just like there is a
chemical module, there will be a math one, and some day one for the
languages). The aim is to have a consistent set of macros fitting into
the context syntax.

So, to answer your question, yes, some amstex functionality is
definitely worth using, and will be available as well.

Hans

Then, didn't you use taco's math module which is supposed to provide all
the amstex goodies?

Loading amstex is quite dangerous since it is a stand alone macro package
which implements fonts, output routines, etc. I must say that you have guts
-) Probably. loading amstex before (!) context works better, since then
context will replace non math stuff.

All,

On a completely silly whim, I tried:

%output=pdf

\input amstex

\starttext

Hello, world!

$$
\aligned
 y&=x+2\\
 z&=3-x
\endaligned
$$

\stoptext

I wasn't really expecting much, and I was rewarded with a host of error
messages, but my alignment was there in the pdf file. Has anyone
successfully used amstex with Context? Boy, the ability to use amstex
within Context would be an attractive package for mathematicans.

I remember that some work was being done on some math forms in Context, but
I was never overly excited about them, and I haven't heard anything about
them for a long time.

Here's my log file:
