When you use this method to get rid of white space, it works, otherwise you need to define a clip path and clip the thing. In pdftex mode clipping is supported (\clip), either by grid (clip cell 2,3) oe by width/height and offset. In dvi mode, I (taco) still has to fix some save/restore problem.
