All,
What line should I put into my source so that images are in draft mode,
that is, only a frame and a filename show up in the preview of the dvi file?

You can try
texexec --fast
as well as play a bit with:
\setupexternalfigures
and [option=empty] or [option=test]
There is also:
\version[temporary]
and
\version[concept]
which will provide your with more info (like figure placement, status
lines, reference and index tracing, etc).
