Hi,

using an old file I realised this:

-------------
\useencoding[win] % not exactly ISO-8859-1, but approx. ok
Test-ÄäÖöÜüß
\bye
-------------

Doesn't work. (I get `Test-´ no more.)

>From the logfile:
encoding : coding win is loaded
(/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/tex/context/base/enco-win.tex)
Missing character: There is no Ä in font cmr12!

Have I missed a syntax change?

Greetings, groeten, Grüße,

Tobias

Not in this case. In enco-win, only a regime is defined (mapping input
encoding onto internal encoding, using active chars). I just tested it here
and I get accented chars,

(so, there's direct input encoding support, mapping char pos's onto font
pos's and indirect regime support; sorry about the confusion, but this 4
dimensional input/font/language/dialect space is fuzzy anyhow; take a look
at the chinese files, and you will see that even within an language there
can be encoding dependencies).

You need to use PostScript fonts (well, at least fonts in an 8-bit
encoding) for this to work. CMR doesn't have the needed characters

Greetings, Taco

Hm. In that case: perhaps you are using a tcx file and/or something
else that changes the catcodes of the 8-bit chars back into 'letter'?
enco-win sets then to \active, just like ~.

If Hans doesnt have the problem (neither have I, btw), then probably
it makes sense to update your context distrib first, just in case.

Greetings, Taco

No, but:

This was using the beta Hans mentioned. Using the new 2000 version,
the problem went away (see my mail from yesterday, 20:42 CET).
